The Solanaceae are known for a large number of edible plants, some of prime economic importance on a world-wide scale (e.g. potatoes, tomatoes, peppers). Others provide edible plants on a smaller or more local scale. A survey of the genera of the family in the New World reveals many species in several genera whose fruits are reported as edible, at least in limited quantities or on a very local scale. Some of these are of potential economic importance, especially in the genus Physalis.
